To hand-address or print address labels? That is the question.

Hand addressing envelopeDo you hand-write the addresses on your Christmas cards, or print them on mailing labels? We thought this was a rather innocuous question, until we brought it up here at Pear Tree and a heated argument ensued.

To our surprise, some team members felt very strongly that using printed address labels instead of addressing Christmas cards by hand was a no-no. “Too commercial. Too impersonal,” they said.

“But wait,” said our product designer, who is very particular about aesthetics. “I don’t like how my handwriting looks. It’s not neat enough. I always do printed labels, and there’s nothing wrong with that.” Others thought the time savings was worth the trade-off and didn’t think twice about using labels. Hmmmm. It seems we have a difference of opinion here.

Maybe you can help settle the argument. Is the convenience of printed labels worth the trade-off in personal attention? Do you think one way or another, for better or worse, about a person who sends a labeled card vs. a handwritten one? We’d love to hear from you!

Creative organization ideas for back to school

Personalized LabelsKids heading off to school have lots of stuff. Moms who have kids heading off to school want to make sure they come home with the same stuff. We’re always looking for creative organization ideas, and this solution repurposes one of our favorite items, the custom address label. These cute little stick-on labels can be personalized in your kids’ choice of colors and designs, printed with either their name or their name and address or phone number, and used in a multitude of ways.

Whether the kids are in kindergarten or college, stick-on address labels can be used to ID school supplies such as notebooks, binders, pencil boxes, lunch bags, even lockers. In college dorms, colorful name labels can help roommates organize their space by identifying storage bins, cubbies, closet shelves & drawers, and to keep track of their stuff such as books, CD’s and electronics.

While you’re at it, use them around the house to organize kids’ toys, label storage bins, boxes, cubbies and more. Once you have a set for each member of your family, you’ll want to stick them everywhere!

School supplies for Mom

Stationery for MomSometime around mid-August, as the summer winds down, it’s like someone throws a switch and suddenly we feel a nostalgic longing for new shoes, a new sweater, and a new box of crayons. Whether you’re eight or thirty-eight, the start of the school year signifies a new beginning, a time to get organized and get down to business.

We sort through the kids’ closets to see what fits and what doesn’t. We clean out cluttered desk drawers, throwing away dried up markers and broken pencils to make room for fresh new ones. And for those of us at Pear Tree, this includes Mom’s desk drawer. Kids aren’t the only ones who need new supplies for the school year. This is the perfect time to re-stock our stationery drawer.

Personalized note cards, thank you notes and address labels are the basics we can’t do without. Next, depending on our kids’ ages, we find mommy cards can be very handy for making connections with other parents at school. For the new teacher, personalized book markers or note cards make a thoughtful beginning-of-the-year gift. Even if we don’t have kids in school, cleaning out our desks and freshening up our stationery collection just feels right at this time of year.

We’ve moved!

No…just kidding. We haven’t moved…but maybe you have? Or are planning a move in the near future? Let me just say that I hate moving. Hate packing, hate unpacking, especially dislike temporary housing because that means you have to do all of that twice.

BUT…the one good thing about moving is you get to send out an adorable moving announcement and let people know about your new address! Here’s one of our newest designs.
