Graduation Party Ideas on a Budget

Looking for ways to throw a graduation party without blowing the budget? Here are some money saving graduation party ideas that will help you plan a budget-friendly party your grad will love.

Our budget: $500
Rough cost breakdown:
20% for Invitations/Thank You Cards/Stamps
50% for Food
15% for Beverages
15% Location/Decorations

General cost-saving tips
Your biggest expenses will be for food, followed by graduation invitations and graduation thank you cards. Because these costs are dependent upon how many people you invite, you can control how much you spend by adjusting the number of people you invite.

  • Create a guest list and stick to it.
  • Invite only close friends and family. It’s not necessary to invite the entire graduating class. Your grad may prefer a smaller affair anyway.
  • If you want to invite classmates, give your grad a limit of how many friends they can invite. And it goes without saying, avoid posting the party on Facebook.
  • Use cost-saving shopping clubs such as Sam’s Club for bulk purchases like paper plates, menu ingredients and beverages.
  • Share costs with another family by throwing a joint party with one of your grad’s friends.

Invitations/Thank You Cards/Stamps
While invitations and thank you cards are a necessity, they don’t have to cost a mint.

  • Pear Tree’s photo paper graduation announcements and invitations start at just 30 cents each.
  • Remember, your guest list may include 75 people, but you only need to send one invite per household. And classmates do not expect invitations in the mail. You only need to send them to the adults on your list.
  • Create your own thank you cards. Using our DIY cards for templates you can customize them with a photo of your grad, or a great photo from the party, and make your own thank you cards!
  • Hand deliver as many invites as you can to save on postage.
  • Send announcements instead of party invitations to those who probably wouldn’t come to the party anyway, but whom you don’t want to exclude. This won’t cut down on printing costs, but it will cut down on party costs.
  • For more invitation ideas see our graduation checklist: order invitations.

Graduation Party Ideas: Garage Party

My nephew, Kevin, graduated from high school this year, and I had lots of fun helping out with the decorations at his graduation party. Given that his future plans are to become an auto mechanic, it was perfectly fitting that the party was going to be held in the family garage!

Outside, we set up a yard sign and lawn games to welcome the neighbors. Inside the garage, the challenge was to make the large space feel welcoming and to keep the focus on our graduate. The school colors of blue and gold were the easiest way to tie the decorations together, but we incorporated photos of Kevin—baby photos, sports and vacation photos, and of course, his senior photo—wherever we could to make our graduation party ideas more personal.

The tables were covered in blue and gold, and scattered with Pear Tree’s personalized Chevron Celebration Graduation Confetti. Pots of blue and white flowers wrapped in blue and gold tissue decorated the tables. We also personalized lots of our Congrats Photo Table Decor with photos, colors and messages of congratulations, and poked of few of them into each centerpiece using wire photo picks.

Glam Graduation Party Ideas

Every graduation party has its own vibe. And the best way to make the party your own is to start is with your grad. What are her interests? How can you use her personality to come up with a party theme? Here are a few easy ways to incorporate your grad’s story into your graduation party ideas. We’ve chosen a girl’s pink and gold glitter theme, but the same ideas and design elements can work for any theme.

What girl doesn’t love a little glitter in her life? We made this party extra sparkly with our Glam Grad Graduation Announcements, and sprinkled gold glitter accents everywhere!

A girly party like this calls for a girly meal. We made adorable chicken salad sandwich triangles and fruit kabobs on skewers. You could also add some fresh veggies displayed neatly. For the beverages we chose lemonade with coordinating pink striped paper straws and edible glitter rims on the milk glasses. To get the glitter rim we dipped the glasses in some vanilla and then dipped them in edible glitter or sugar sprinkles. For the backdrop on this glam table setup we used our Glam Grad Gold Party Decorations and stuck them to the wall in a fun gradient/fading pattern.
