Friendship Day may not be a holiday on everyone’s calendar, but here at Pear Tree it’s just the incentive we need to plan a girls’ night out, or send a note to a friend we haven’t seen in awhile. What are you doing to celebrate friendship day? Here are a few ideas we had:
A few weeks ago, I had to bring my car into the shop to get it checked out. Since I had recently moved to town, I asked friends for recommendations and wound up bringing it to a small, locally-owned place in town.
From the beginning, I was pleased with their service. I was able to drop it off in the morning, and one of the employees was kind enough to meet me there before opening and give me a ride to work. Later that day they called to tell me they had found a serious safety issue with the car, completely unrelated to the problems I’d been having. Despite a heavy workload, they were able to get the parts and have them installed the very next day.
When I picked up the car, I found a small package of jelly beans with a handwritten note that said, “Thank you for supporting our locally-owned business.” I had a great feeling about them and knew I’d be going back to them when necessary. Well, that turned out to be sooner than expected. Continue reading
I thought I would share this while it was fresh in my memory. This morning, when I opened up my kid’s lunchbox, I found a note from my husband. It was very unexpected, and put a smile on my face. What did it say?
Thank you for making the kids’ lunches every day. I don’t know how I’d do it without you.
I love you,
Just wanted to share. It made my day.

I recently went to a going away party for a man who was leaving for Kuwait the following week. His wife, a friend of mine, was pregnant with their first child. Heartbreaking, I know! As a going away present, I decided to give them personalized note cards–two sets–one that said “We miss you,” for Mom and child to write to dad; and another that said, “I miss you,” for Dad to write to Mom and child.
They seemed to love the cards, but after the party was over my friend came up to me and said, “These are great, but mailing notes just takes soooo long to get there.” She planned on using mostly email and Skype to communicate with her husband. Of course, nothing can beat the immediate satisfaction of a video call, but I hoped she’d come to realize that handwritten notes, unlike emails or video chats, would become keepsakes of this important time in their lives.
I couldn’t even imagine the mental stress she would be experiencing, going through a pregnancy and childbirth while he was gone. But I do know that there is something about sitting down and writing a note that makes you feel connected to a person. A love note to a soldier can be about anything. Just the fact that you’re writing a note tells him that you love him. Continue reading
Just a heads up–May 8th is Teacher Appreciation Day. Many families choose to show their appreciation with a gift at the end of the school year, instead. But it doesn’t matter when you say it, as long as you say it.
